This was not a
scheduled club run so we started a bit later than usual, we
actually dropped into the trails about 10AM. The sky was
filled with wispy clouds and it appeared we were in for a
beautiful day. We entered Box Canyon from the south, Price
road, and made our way through towards the Martinez turn.
This was Virgils second run in the Jeep so we wanted to take it
easy but have a chance to play on the way also.

We reached the
turn with no incident and headed east from Box Canyon. By
now the sky was clear, air was warming up and the panoramic
scenery was incredible. This is not a hard trip for an
experienced driver and capable rig but it always proves to be a
beautiful run.

There are
several smaller obstacles to play on along the way and I took
the opportunity on several occasions. Once you make reach
the Martinez / Coke Ovens junction and make the right turn, the
trail starts to climb and in many areas becomes more rock than
dirt.

One
particular are requires climbing a larger, slick rock and then
making a sharp right turn to continue up the hill. It is
not a hard obstacle on a built up vehicle but stock or low
clearance vehicles will have trouble climbing over the rock and
long wheelbase vehicles may have trouble with the hard right
turn.

As you
come up to higher ground and around a bend in the trail, it
opens up to an awesome view and a pull off area beside the
trail. We took the pull off and a chance for a lunch break

Good food and fellowship,
a thorough cleanup and we were once again on the trail and
heading south toward the river and the promise of the bee-hive
looking structures to be around a few more twists in the trail.

From the top of a steep descent,
you see them off to the right and as usual, there are others
already there enjoying the beauty of it all. We make the
trek down the hill and through the trees then back up an incline
where we line up our rigs for pictures and a chance to get out
and enjoy the view.

While we were there, Pete met a couple gentlemen that were visiting from the north
but had made the run several times before and said they knew the
south route out across the river and over to Florence.
Always ready for a new way to try we agreed to follow them out.
It was a great drive down from the Ovens and out to the river
which was running low and made for an easy but interesting
crossing. From there we made our way to the railroad
tracks and crossed over close to the trestle that leads to the
tunnel. Up to this point, all went well but around this
point our guides made a wrong turn and we ended up a long way
off course and heading towards Kearny AZ that is out on highway
77. After a short talk and directions from a local
couple that we met wheeling in a great old international truck,
we located the Kearny / Florence highway (dirt highway???)
and headed west, after a short break to air the tires back up.
By the time we made it back out to highway 79 ( real paved
highway) and were heading back to Mesa, it was well after dark
but it had been an enjoyable day of wheeling and we all said a
quick thanks to our loving Lord for the time and place he had
given us to enjoy.

God Bless
