Box Canyon

The morning started with Pete heading to the church to meet any club members and Barb, Ben and I took our trail full of quads and headed to Cottonwood Canyon road to unload and get ready for the run.  It turned out that no club members show for the run so Pete headed to Cottonwood and Aaron, Ryan and friends met us there with his freshly lifted and ready to test Chevy truck.  The truck is pretty wild, not necessarily built as a rock crawler but definitely a toy to play with, lots of lift and a set of 39.5" IROK tires

Some friendly greetings and a trail prayer then the quad riders donned safety gear and we headed out.  They day was pretty uneventful and just an easy enjoyable ride till we hit the staircase at the start to Box Canyon.  Up till then, we played with the truck and took some time to flex it a bit and see where the tip points were.  The truck did very well, needs gears still and is a bit top heavy due to the height and weight but but will definitely be a good desert toy / canyon crawler, the rocks however, can get him on some pretty strange angles and the front undercarriage is a bit of a hindrance in the rocks.  Nice truck overall and did very well.  T the staircase, several of us made it down but there was a man there getting quite impatient wanting to tow a rolled over expedition up the staircase.  Pete backed off and let the man bring it on up.  We asked when he rolled it but he said he had no idea who owned it, he just found it back there and assumed it was abandoned and wanted the parts off it.  He made it about half way up but could not make the last step.  Pete hooked up his winch to the truck but still was not quite enough.  About that time a Jeep come up by Pete and also had a winch, together, the two of them got him up the step but then he ran into problem number 2, the Explorer kept turning toward the wall.  Ryan jumped in the passenger window and started steering the Explorer and they made it the rest of the way up.  As he pulled away, we let the built up crowd head on down and in the middle of the group were a pair of heavily worked tube buggies.  Pete secured the winch and was about to come down when he found he had a brake problem.  Evidently, while holding hard on the brake and winching the truck, Pete blew a front brake line.  Well, with the E-brake we decided we could limp it home, so we continued on.

Back rolling again, we played in the small stream of water as we wound our way thru the canyon.  I was on my quad but, since I was shooting pictures, there are not any of me but on the other four were Ben, Luke, Barb on the first ride of her new quad and then Lori.  Pete and Aaron followed close behind and slowed to play on skidplate rock.

We had originally intended to play in the dunes area south of box canyon but due to the brake line problem we decided it was best to load up and call it a day.  This was pretty much an old favorite as far as rides go, Box Canyon is just a fun ride on the quads but has enough sides areas to make it fun for the rigs also and the scenery can be breathtaking.  Thanks for joining us

God Bless
